# Share of voice

> Your slice of every brand mention in your category.

Visibility tells you whether you're named. Share of voice tells you whether you're winning.

Share of voice is how often the AI engines name you, as a percentage of every brand mention across your tracked prompts. If the engines named brands 400 times last week and 48 of those were you, your share of voice is 12%.

## How is share of voice calculated?

FixAEO reads every brand name out of each captured answer, not just yours. Your count is divided by the total.

```
share of voice = your mentions ÷ all brand mentions × 100
```

The change beside it is reported in percentage points, not percent.

You choose the denominator. **All brands** divides by every brand the scanner detected in your answers. **Tracked only** divides by you plus the competitors you've pinned, which gives a tighter read on a specific rival set.

<Note>
  The denominator toggle only appears once you've pinned at least one competitor. Until then, every share is measured against all detected brands. See [Tracking competitors](/competitors).
</Note>

You'll find share of voice on [Industry benchmarks](/industry) in three shapes. It's the ranking table, the trend chart for the top five brands plus you, and the x-axis of the competitive quadrant.

## What's a good share of voice?

It depends entirely on how crowded your category is. In a four-brand market, 25% is average. In a forty-brand market, 10% would make you the clear leader.

So read the rank and the direction, not the raw number. Being third and climbing beats being second and sliding.

<Tip>
  Share of voice is zero-sum. Yours can fall while your [Visibility Score](/metrics/visibility-score) rises, which just means the engines started naming more brands per answer.
</Tip>

## How do you improve it?

Click any competitor row on [Industry benchmarks](/industry) to open their drilldown. It lists the prompts where they get named and you don't. That's your work queue.

From there, check the [Sources](/sources) tab in the same drilldown to see which sites are feeding the engines their answer. Getting cited on those sites is usually the fastest route. [Improve](/improve) turns the gaps into concrete recommendations.
