Being named fifth in a list of five isn't the same as being named first. Position is the average ranking of your brand across the answers that name it. FixAEO shows it as a single number on the industry ranking card, like `#1.8`. Lower is better. ## How is position calculated? The position metric averages your ranking across all the responses where your brand appears. Answers that never name you are left out, so being absent can't drag the number down. A lower number means the engines lead with you. Around 1 or 2, you're usually the first or second brand a reader meets. Higher up the scale, readers work through several competitors before they reach you — same answer, much less attention. Until an answer names your brand, position shows an em-dash rather than a number. An empty position isn't a bad position. ## What's a good position? Under 3 is strong, because most list-shaped answers name three to seven brands. Around 5 or higher means you're consistently the afterthought — present, but below the options a reader will actually click. There's a catch worth naming. A brand named twice, first both times, will beat a brand named two hundred times averaging 2.5. Never read position without volume beside it. Keep [Visibility Score](/metrics/visibility-score) and your mention count on screen at the same time. ## How do you improve it? Position follows authority, so the levers are the same ones that move visibility, just aimed higher. Look at which [Sources](/sources) the engines pull first, and work on being cited by the sites that get read early. Then check [Topics and labels](/topics-and-labels). Position usually varies sharply by theme. You'll often find you lead on one topic and trail on another, which is a much more actionable finding than a single average. Whether you're named at all.
